We’re excited to share that Speech in the City is now offering Early Intervention speech and feeding therapy at our Upper East Side office.
Families participating in New York City’s Early Intervention Program can now receive supportive, individualized services at our Manhattan location in a warm, child-centered, and family-centered environment.
Early Intervention Speech & Feeding Therapy on the Upper East Side
New York City’s Early Intervention Program supports infants and toddlers under 3 years old who have a developmental delay or a diagnosed condition that may affect development. Areas considered can include communication, physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and adaptive development.
At Speech in the City, Early Intervention services may support children with needs related to:
- Early language development and late talking
- Receptive and expressive language
- Speech sound development
- Social communication
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
- Feeding difficulties
- Expanding food experiences
- Oral-motor and feeding skill development
- Parent and caregiver coaching
Our approach is evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming, child-led, and family-centered. We want children to feel safe and supported while giving families practical strategies they can carry over into everyday routines.
How Do I Apply for Early Intervention in NYC?
You do not need to wait for your pediatrician to refer your child. Parents and caregivers can make an Early Intervention referral themselves if they have concerns about their child’s development.
Step 1: Make an Early Intervention Referral
If you live in New York City, you can begin the process in one of two ways:
Call 311 and ask for Early Intervention, or use the NYC Early Intervention Referral Portal online.

Step 2: Connect With a Service Coordinator
After your child is referred, the Early Intervention Program will help connect your family with an initial service coordinator. Your service coordinator helps guide you through the Early Intervention process, including arranging your child’s evaluation.
Step 3: Complete an Evaluation
Children referred to Early Intervention can receive a multidisciplinary evaluation at no cost to the family to determine whether they are eligible for the program.
The evaluation looks at different areas of development and helps identify your child’s strengths as well as areas where additional support may be helpful.
Step 4: Develop an IFSP
If your child qualifies for Early Intervention, your family will participate in developing an Individualized Family Service Plan, or IFSP.
The IFSP outlines your child’s goals and the Early Intervention services that are recommended to support those goals.
If speech-language or feeding therapy is included in your child’s IFSP, you can speak with your service coordinator about available providers and service options.
Does Early Intervention Cost Families Money?
Early Intervention services are provided to eligible families at no out-of-pocket cost. Insurance information may be collected and insurance may be used to help pay for services, but families are not responsible for co-pays or deductibles for Early Intervention services.
There is also no income requirement to participate in New York State’s Early Intervention Program.
